The Basis of the YWCA is FAITH in God, the Father Almighty and Jesus Christ, his only son, Our Lord and Saviour and in the Holy Spirit and the motto.
With an amazing clarity of vision, the Founder of the Y.W.C.A movement, Hon (Mrs.) Emily Kinnaird stated that the Y.W.C.A could be a power in the lives of the young women’ and this was proved profoundly true wherever the movement spread.
The stirring saga of the Y.W.C.A of Madras spans a period of over one hundred and twenty one years. Mary Hill the then General Secretary in 1896 acquired this property fulfilling her own cherished vision that the Y.W.C.A. must have its own campus. Situated on the busy Poonamallee High Road, this lush and lovely campus housing the Y.W.C.A centre, the many Programmes and Projects and the Hostels is a veritable sylvan wood in the midst of the humdrum of busy life around.
Rooted in the Christian faith, the YWCA endeavours to emancipate women and girls, irrespective of race, culture and creed, and seeks to develop a membership that is responsive, through service, to the needs of a community in a changing world. The YWCA of Madras, provides a platform to vocalize issues that are plaguing society and ensures that aid is generated and made available.
